Orchard Establishment

An orchard is a long-term investment, and the costliest mistakes usually happen before planting. We assess your land in the field and design an orchard that fits your soil, water, climate and target market.

Why it matters

The hardest things to fix in an orchard are the decisions made before the first tree goes in. A poorly chosen plot, weak drainage or low-quality irrigation water will hold back yield and fruit quality for years. Fertilizer and crop protection rarely make up for these problems later. Cherry orchards are especially sensitive to frost, waterlogging and soil structure.

That is why our orchard planning starts in the field. We walk your land, interpret the lab results with you and base every decision on data. Our goal is simple: help you build an orchard that produces export-quality, residue-free fruit and is easy and sustainable to run.

What we assess

  • Climate and frost risk: Late spring frosts, chill hours, summer heat and the risk of rain at harvest.
  • Topography and air drainage: Slope, aspect and low spots where cold air settles.
  • Soil: Texture, depth, organic matter, pH, lime and salinity. A pre-planting soil analysis is the foundation here.
  • Water drainage: Groundwater level and how water behaves after heavy rain. Cherry roots do not tolerate standing water.
  • Irrigation water: Source, volume and quality. We look closely at EC, SAR, boron and chloride.
  • Market and logistics: Target market, harvest window, access to labor and cold chain options.

Our process

  1. First conversation: We discuss your goals, budget range and timeline.
  2. Site visit: We walk the land, open soil profiles and mark sampling points.
  3. Analysis: We arrange soil and water tests and go through the results with you.
  4. Orchard design: We define the species, variety and rootstock combination, the training system, row orientation and planting distances.
  5. Infrastructure plan: We plan land preparation, drainage, irrigation, trellis or support, windbreaks and, where needed, hail nets or rain covers.
  6. Implementation schedule: We set out every step from soil preparation to planting, with clear responsibilities.
  7. Planting and first-year follow-up: We are on site at planting and monitor the orchard through its first growing season.

What we watch for in cherry orchards

Among temperate fruits, cherry is one of the most demanding when it comes to site selection. Heavy, poorly drained soils increase the risk of root and crown rot. Frost-prone sites give uneven yields from one year to the next. Rain close to harvest cracks the fruit. So we look at plot selection, rootstock choice and protective covers as one decision. Even in strong cherry regions such as Bursa and the wider Marmara region, two neighboring plots can behave very differently.

We take the same approach with apple, pear, peach, apricot and plum. Each species has its own climate and soil needs, and we shape the project around them.

What you get

At the end of the process you receive a written orchard plan. It covers the site assessment, lab interpretation, species, variety and rootstock recommendations, planting layout, infrastructure list and work schedule. You can share it directly with your nursery, irrigation contractor and field teams, so everyone works from the same plan.

Who is it for?

  • Investors planning their first commercial orchard
  • Growers who want to turn existing land into a modern orchard
  • Corporate farms expanding into new plots
  • Buyers who want a suitability check before purchasing land

We stay with you after planting, too. Our irrigation, pruning and nutrition services help you manage the critical first years of the orchard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ideally at least a year before planting. Soil and water testing, land preparation, drainage and sourcing trees all take time. Quality trees of newer varieties and rootstocks are usually ordered well in advance. Planning early lowers both cost and risk.

No. Cherries are sensitive to heavy, poorly drained soils, standing water and frost during bloom. If our site assessment shows that cherry is not a good fit, we tell you plainly. Where possible, we suggest a better-suited species or plot.

We define the sampling points and the scope of the analysis. The tests are carried out by a qualified laboratory. We then interpret the results with you and build them directly into the orchard design.

Yes. We offer irrigation, pruning, nutrition and team training support, both in the early years and once the orchard is in production. This makes sure the decisions taken at setup are applied correctly in the field.
